Online Edition of What's Up! in Business Development for Burns Flat

March 2009

March:  In like a Lion and out like a Lamb.  Sometimes around here, the weather is Lion, Lamb, Lion, Lamb, Lion, Lion, Lion!  In any case, March has arrived and that means March Madness at the NCAA level, baseballs and softballs flying at the high school level, and spring break just around the corner.  It also means it is time for another edition of What's Up.  Enjoy this month's newsletter.

Extra! Extra!Read All About It!!!

Come One!  Come All!  This March 11th.

There will be blood drive at the BFDC High School from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the library.

Have you been wanting to do something good for somebody else and just can't figure out what to do?  Well, opportunity knocks!  What better way to give that to give blood.  It could save a life and your body will replenish you with fresh new blood quickly.  What a magnificent blessings our bodies are that we can produce this life sustaining liquid.  What a blessing you can be to your fellow man or woman in need.

Mark your calendar.  On March 11th, I'm doing something special for someone I don't even know.  I'm giving blood.

See you there!

Who Ya Gonna Call?

I like the theme song to Ghostbusters too, but don’t look for their help for severe weather in Oklahoma.  Let’s get serious.  Who are we going to call?  How will we know if it’s time to seek shelter?  What if we get hit by a real community sized disaster?

These are good questions that deserve well thought out, well planned, practiced and coordinated answers.  That is exactly why you should be at the Burns Flat Community Center at 7:00 p.m. on March 19th, 2009.  Officials from the Burns Flat and surrounding areas will present community disaster preparedness plans and answer questions.

Bring you questions.  Bring your suggestions.  Bring a listening ear, and bring a friend.  The more we know, the better we can deal with whatever my come our way.

Spring Forward!

Yes, it’s that time again.  Time to change the time and set our watches and clocks ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m., Sunday, March 8th.  No you don’t have to wait up until two in the morning.  Just set your clock ahead one hour before you go to bed.  In fact, go to bed one hour early that evening so you don’t sleep through the sermon in church.

Chamber to Meet at Noon!

Mark the 16th of March on your calendars and make sure that you make it to the Eagle’s Nest for a noon time meeting of the Burns Flat Chamber of Commerce.  The noon hour will make for a brisk meeting as many must get back to work and hopefully, it will also afford more people the opportunity to attend.

Don’t belong to the Chamber?  We can fix that.  Businesses and individuals may both join for a small fee and this meeting is the perfect time for that.  Why join?  Besides the community fellowship shared at these meetings, we will give your business some visibility in this publication, and together search for common opportunities and solutions for our Burns Flat businesses and entrepreneurs.

Are You in the Shape that you want?

Now is the time to get that body back into shape with Mozelles March Special.  Get the best workout that you have had in a long time on their new equipment.  Just $50 gets you a month’s worth of work out.

Pharmacy Facts

If you have a Burns Flat Post Office Box, then you probably received official notice from GPRMC about the local pharmacy closing.  It’s uncertain at this time if another provider will try to fill the void.  In the interim, you may consider calling some of the area pharmacies to see if they will deliver to Burns Flat.

One report received indicates that Grandview Pharmacy in Elk City may be willing to deliver to Burns Flat.  Frequency of delivery, stipulations, and delivery charges were not confirmed.  To determine what services might be available, call Brian at 225-5550.

The Eagle’s Nest is Eyeing Your Special Needs This Month!

If you have given up meat for Lent, don’t worry, the Eagle’s Nest has you covered.  They will be serving fish sandwiches or fish dinners on demand.  Don’t know what to do for Saint Patty’s Day?  Well, you can’t get Green Eggs and Ham but you can get corned beef, cabbage, and whole (new) potatoes on the 17th to satisfy those Irish cravings.  It may not be the luck of the Irish, but some folks still have a little luck here finding a $2 bill wrapped in their silverware at the Nest.

Promise Keepers to Meet on Saturday, 28 March 2009!

The Western Oklahoma Promise Keepers—MEN OF INTEGRITY—meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Eagle’s Nest on Saturday, 28 March 2009 for breakfast, encouragement, and a dose of God’s word.

Why would I spend an hour of my Saturday morning with these guys?  Because these guys are taking the first step in reclaiming the spiritual leadership of this land.  If you want to see real progress in real lives then real men must step up and live lives of integrity.

The January meeting had 24 men and the February gathering had 17.  This doesn’t seem like many men, but only a few months ago, 10 men went to a Promise Keepers conference.  This year our goal is to fill a bus.  Then look out.  We will fill churches, meet real needs in our families and in our communities, and be a community of integrity.  If you are a man and are reading this, be there on the 28th.

Fuel cost to get there $1.82

Breakfast $5

Camaraderie—Priceless

Sea Stories

Several years ago, I was playing golf in a foursome one winter in Burns Flat, Oklahoma.  When you can play golf in Oklahoma in January, life is good, and the scores not so nearly as important as having a good time.  We had played several holes when I hit a drive that landed in the wooded part of the rough.  As all of us approached the ball,  I looked over and under for a good way out of my predicament.  Then one of the foursome offered words of encouragement.  He said that he always looks for one good thing in every shot—no matter what the lie.  I looked up from my lie in the rough wondering what he had seen that I had overlooked, and he continued, “and the good thing about this shot is that it's not mine!”

What should I do in Tough Times?

Finally there is someplace to turn to get some sound advice for tough times. I hope that you were not looking for advice on your 401K, paying off loans or investing in the market, or any of those fancy financial strategies.

Here is what you do for tough times—circle the wagons and tough it out.  But I don’t have any wagons.  What do I do?  Get some!

We were not made to go through this life all on our own.  Our families were not made to make it on our own.  We are designed to live as a family of faith.  Yes that means get to church, make it a home, and stay with them thick and thin.  You will be on both ends of the thick and the thin and can help those in need as well receive help when your family knows you.

The Ministerial Alliance meets with individuals and families each week that are having trouble making it in these tough times.  Unfortunately, many have left God and God’s family out of their lives for so long, they feel uncomfortable about walking back into a church.

There is a simple solution for that—get over it and get on with it.  Go to church this Sunday—no excuses.

The alliance helps many but cannot and should not help everyone with money that comes to see us.  Some folks just need to go get a job (most of the time employers don’t come looking for you).  All in the alliance have agreed to help everyone in these two ways.  Ask each individual we come in contact with if they have accepted Jesus as Lord and encourage them to live the way they were designed to live—in a family of faith.  That’s right, in a church family.

Hold on just a minute.  I know how this works, they get you in the door and then they pass the plate and get your money.  If that’s what you are afraid of, come anyway.  Once in the door, you might discover that God wants to bless you.
