Let’s talk Value!

I’m adding a new room on my house and need some lumber. I’m probably going to make the drive to the nearest Lowe’s or Home Depot. I need a couple of 2” X 4” to repair something in my back yard. I’m probably going to Cordell, Clinton, or Elk City. It’s just not worth the drive to OKC for a couple boards. We usually aren’t adding a room on our house every day, but we do eat every day. Often we go out to eat or at least get something to go. So where do we go when we don’t want to cook. Clinton and Elk City have all the named brand restaurants—Sizzler, Long John’s, Arby’s, McDonalds, KFC (I’ve often wondered if the chickens know if they are destined to be original or extra crispy), as well as the home grown establishments in these towns. It’s a pretty good selection. But what about dining in Burns Flat? Nora’s, Willie’s, and the Eagle’s Nest all have excellent food. So is it the price that says let’s go to McDonalds?

Let’s give that a little closer inspection. I stop in the Eagle’s Nest for a dine-in lunch. I’m hungry for a burger and fries, that’s why I was thinking McDonalds. I can’t find a quarter pounder on the Eagle’s Nest menu, not because they don’t have big burgers, but because they have a 1/3 pound burger. Ok, the burger is better here in town, but do they have fries. The answer is yes, but here’s the catch. They are cooked just for me. I don’t get to play the are they going to be hot this time game. You know the game. You order your fast food burger and stare across the counter at the fries sitting in the bin. Out comes a batch of hot fries, but wait! They get mixed in with those from 20 minutes ago. I sure like those fries when they are hot. I know, because I had some in a McDonalds that were all hot in 1976. OK, so the food here in town might be a little better and cooked just for me, but what about price. That third pound burger with cheese, fries, and a coke (or other beverage) comes to $5.84 plus tax. Wait a minute! That’s about the same thing that I would pay for a value meal at McDonalds.

Now let’s factor the drive. Most of us burn at least a couple gallons of fuel for the round trip to Clinton or Elk City. Add three, four, five, or more dollars worth of expense to this meal just to get there and back. On top of that, you might just find a $2 bill in your silverware at the Eagle’s Nest and end up talking with friends or meeting the folks that live down the road. Compare your prices and savings at Nora’s and Willie’s as well and you will see that it’s not just convenient, it is good value to eat here in town.
If you are already in Elk City and have been hungering for some KFC all week, by all means go for the colonel’s fowl meal. But if you want a good meal, at a good price, with good company, in a friendly setting—then don’t go out of town. Eat locally and enjoy. Eat locally and save!
Chamber to Meet at Noon!
The Burns Flat Chamber of Commerce decided to move its Monday evening meetings to noon in hopes that this would increase attendance. Many owners and managers do not live in town and the noontime meeting would not require them to make a special trip. It would also impose a sense of urgency upon the meeting that all agreed would be healthy. The Next Chamber meeting will be held March 16th at the Eagle’s Nest at 12:00 p.m.
In other Chamber news, Stacie Cloyd and Tom Collins volunteered to work the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11th. The Chamber also voted to donate $100 to the Relay for Life. The Chamber also examined what it was doing for local businesses and asked members to consider how the Chamber could assist them.
What’s Up with the Pharmacy?
Will it stay or will it go? Many have been asking this question. Many more have been making up their own answers. As is most often the case, fact and rumor make for strange speculation and sometimes undue anxiety.
Currently the Town of Burns Flat and the Chamber of Commerce are exploring alternatives. Many would like to have a pharmacy here. Many rely heavily upon it because they no longer drive much. The current pharmacy is run by the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City, but it may discontinue its Burns Flat operations this month. As altruistic as we would like to believe the medical profession is, the bottom line often rules in these cases. We are not privy to the profit and loss that GPRMC must consider. The bottom line, however, is not the only factor. People influence people. If you would like to express your thoughts on this matter to the GPRMC, the address is GPRMC PO Box 2339, Elk City OK 73648. Robin Lake is the CEO. Other information is available at www.gprmc-ok.com.
GPRMC is not the only business that could provide a pharmacy in our town. Other alternatives may produce the ultimate solution here. Whatever the outcome, we should not expect to keep a pharmacy if most people don’t use it.
